Move-a-thon 2014 raises $7,000

On January 11th, hundreds of people came out to the Children’s Park in Lower Bight to support Nutrition in Demand’s 3rd annual Move-a-thon.  Participants took off in the brisk morning breeze to walk, run or bike in the 5K, 10K or half marathon event.  The Move-a-thon is a major fundraiser for Nutrition in Demand–a non-profit organization aimed at raising awareness to health and healthy eating.

Once participants completed the course, they were welcomed to a health fair with over twenty vendors from various disciplines in the medical field as well as the environmental and occupational safety fields.  Participants were able to interact with these professionals and get credible information about their given areas.  As parents participated in the health fair, the children were involved in lots of games and activities headed by Cultural Director, Mr. David Bowen.  Later in the morning persons got involved in zumba and watched a fire demonstration.  According to everyone present, it was a fun morning for all.

According to the event organizer, Registered Dietitian and Executive Director of Nutrition in Demand Mrs. Tamika Handfield, “I’m always overwhelmed, always humbled, and always so grateful for the support we get from the community.” Mrs. Handfield further added, “Through the support of the community and corporate sponsors, we were able to raise $7,000.  These funds will be used to host a nutrition and physical activity summer camp for children, continue the Nutrition Education and culinary classes for schools as well as help to take the disease prevention workshops to the other islands in the Turks & Caicos.”
